We hasten to add, just before we go further, that the fly swatter zapper itself does not provide anything like ten million volts of anything at all. It is battery powered, and works a minimal level charge that, at worst, would give a moistened human finger tip a delectable little shock. A moistened human finger tip, needless to say, is not a mosquito – when a mossie makes contact with that tiny charge, she or he (apparently it’s just the women that bite. Dare we say “typical”?) fries immediately, with a gratifying little click. The zapper is “charged” by using a button on the tennis racket handle – when the thing goes live it keeps its power for quite a while, so make sure to discharge it against something safe should you not score any strong hits on the flying enemy in your area. And do keep your fly swatter zapper well out of the reach of kids – it is probably not especially dangerous, but it still delivers a bite which will have even the most untroubled kid wailing like a fire engine before you know it.
The mesh on the zapper (what could be the “strings” of the “racket”) is fairly amazing, once you analyze it (don’t do it literally unless of course you would like to shock the tip of your nose) – and virtually defines the type and size of creepy crawlie you can go for. When you take a close look at one of these simple bug bats, you will find that it actually has three layers of mesh – two outer layers (one on each side of the racket) then one inner. It’s the inner layer that does the harm: the outer ones exist for your safety. What should really occur is: a bug crawls inside the protective mesh on the fly swatter zapper and gets nuked by the live inner layer. Meaning, obviously, that you simply cannot toast anything that won’t fit through the holes. Buy accordingly and ensure you get the right size for your prize. Happy hunting!
